Never thought of Munch’s screamer in terms of a cartoon face. In his book on Superman, Larry Tye captures the pricey (recently sold for $119 million) legend’s face as one of a “cartoon of gibbering existential terror.”
So was, says Tye, the face of Superman on the cover of the first Action Comic edition released to the newsstands in June 1938.
